Okay, I haven't received many (any?) questions about paraphrasing and summarizing, so I assume that you guys are ready for the assignment.
ASSIGNMENT:
Open up the essay that you sent to me last week re: Compare/Contrast.
1) Write a summary of the entire thing.
Remember from my notes and the book, that summarizing should ONLY be the 'main ideas,' without any details/supporting details/anecdotes/introductions. It should be rougly 1/3 the length of the original.
2) Paraphrase the first body paragraph.
Paraphrasing includes everything. The sentences should NOT look anything like the original. If you met the new, paraphrased sentence on the street, you wouldn't recognize it. But it would smell familiar. Should be about the same length, including every idea/supporting detail. When we paraphrase, we must not think "what is the minimum I can do?" but instead use all the tricks we can to change the sentence to the maximum of our ability.
In both exercises, be sure not to change the meaning!
DEADLINE: E-mail me your assignment by noon on Thursday.
